Buraco against the computer

You can play buraco against the computer, free and in the browser. Buraco is the Brazilian branch of the canasta family, and this is the calm way into it: a hand that starts when you want it and starts again when you want it, with nobody waiting on the other side.

Before you sit down: the game still opens in Portuguese. The rules are the same and the table reads without much text, but we would rather say it now than after you arrive. English is written and waiting to be published.

That is the whole of it. You can look at your hand for as long as you like, think about the discard, and leave the table when the phone rings. If a hand goes badly you start another one, without feeling that you are holding three other people up.

It is also how most people settle the three things that order the game: the morto, the difference between a clean and a dirty canastra, which is a meld of seven cards or more, and what you need before you can go out.

The computer plays the same rules

The deal is the one you would get at any table. Two decks, eleven cards to each player, and two face-down mortos of eleven. The computer draws, melds and goes out under the rules you play by, and the scoring is the same on both sides: the ace 15, the two 10, three to seven 5, eight to king 10, a dirty canastra 100, a clean one 200, and 100 for going out.

Your first game is played to 1500 points. You can also set 1000, 2000 or 3000 when you want a shorter or a longer sitting.

When the table is short of people

Buraco is played four-handed in pairs, and there are not always four people free at the hour you are. The computer takes the seats nobody is in, so the hand starts instead of waiting. If somebody has to leave halfway through, that seat does not go dead either, and the rest of the table can finish the game.

Offline, and with no adverts

There is an offline mode as well, so a hand against the computer holds up on a journey or wherever the signal comes and goes. What it covers and what it does not is set out on the page about buraco offline.

There are no adverts during a hand, and nothing to buy in order to keep playing. When you would rather have people back at the table, you can open a private table for friends and hand out an invite code.
